Stepping Beyond Borders: Carmen Suciu’s Global Learning Journey in HR

People & Culture

Meet Carmen Suciu, HR Manager at Heraeus Electronics Romania. She recently completed a three-month global learning assignment at the company’s headquarters in Hanau, Germany. This experience allowed her to strengthen cross-cultural HR collaboration, expand her professional network, and gain valuable insights into international HR practices - demonstrating the power of curiosity, adaptability, and a global footprint.

My name is Carmen Suciu, and I have been part of Heraeus Electronics Romania team for the past 12 years, since Heraeus opened the site in Timisoara.

Can you tell us about your current role at Heraeus Electronics and the location where you did your learning experience/ assignment?

I currently serve as the Human Resources Manager at the Heraeus Electronics site in Romania. During a three-month learning assignment in Germany, I had the opportunity to work closely with the local HR team, supporting HR Germany operations and contributing to global development initiatives within Heraeus Electronics.

What motivated you to take up this learning opportunity at another Heraeus Electronics location?

I was motivated by the opportunity to broaden my professional perspective and gain firsthand experience in a different cultural and operational environment. I saw it as a chance to grow both personally and professionally, while also strengthening the collaboration between our site in Timisoara and the headquarters in Hanau.

How was your experience in the new location?

My experience in Hanau was incredibly enriching. I was warmly welcomed by the team. The professional environment was dynamic and collaborative, and I appreciated the opportunity to contribute while learning from colleagues with diverse backgrounds and expertise.

How did it help you to strengthen your HR network within Heraeus?

During my learning assignment, I had the opportunity to significantly expand my HR network within Heraeus. Collaborating closely with colleagues at the headquarters helped me better understand the complexity of certain HR processes at the local level. By gaining a broader perspective - comparing practices across at least two sites - I came to appreciate how legal requirements, cultural differences, and local business needs all influence how HR operates. This experience gave me a much clearer understanding of why some processes may seem complex when viewed only from a single-site perspective.

What advice would you give to colleagues considering a similar opportunity?

I would strongly encourage colleagues to take advantage of such opportunities. This was a valuable development experience offered by Heraeus Electronics, made possible by our global footprint. It not only broadened my perspective, but also strengthened cross-border collaboration and deepened my understanding of our global HR practices. Stepping into a different environment challenges you to grow, adapt, and build meaningful professional relationships.
So, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Be open, curious, and proactive.

What is your favorite German food?

That’s an easy one—definitely Schnitzel mit Kartoffelsalat! I also enjoyed trying different types of Bratwurst, bread and pastries, especially the fresh Brezel. German cuisine was a delightful part of the experience!
