Engineering Curiosity into Innovation: A Conversation with Senthil Kumar Balasubramanian

What drives you personally? Are your passions met through your work with Heraeus Electronics?

What drives me is the excitement of solving problems and the opportunity to continue learning. I’ve always been curious about how things work, and working with different interconnect materials has given me the change to dive deep into that curiosity. Every challenge is like a puzzle, and I enjoy figuring out how to make things better, more efficient, and innovative.

At Heraeus Electronics, I feel like my passions are not just acknowledged, but actively supported. Fresh ideas and improvements are encouraged, which really resonates with me.

What makes it interesting to work at Heraeus Electronics?

What makes working here exciting for me is knowing that the materials we work on, especially in the semiconductor space, are at the heart of technologies people rely on every day. It’s not just about making products; it’s about contributing to something bigger that touches lives globally.

What really keeps it interesting is how fast things are evolving. The push to innovate based on megatrends like electrification, AI, and sustainability means we’re constantly exploring new ideas and developing materials that meet tomorrow’s needs.

Can you briefly describe a recent project or achievement that you feel especially proud of?

One project I’m especially proud of was a collaboration with one of our leading customers where we successfully qualified Welco paste for their new package design. This new design aimed to support higher I/O counts while reducing the overall footprint, which is no small feat, making it a challenging but rewarding process.

What made it meaningful was not just the technical success, but the teamwork and trust involved. We worked closely with the customer, adapting quickly to meet their needs. Seeing our solution play a key role in enabling their next-generation product was exciting to be a part of.  

How do you feel your skills and contributions have positively impacted your team or Heraeus Electronics?

With nearly 20 years in the semiconductor industry, I’ve had the chance to work across diverse functions and disciplines, shaping how I currently support my team. It’s rewarding to see how that knowledge helps others grow. I’ve watched team members gain confidence, pick up new skills faster, and take on more complex challenges. Knowing that I’ve played a role in building a stronger, more capable team is something that I’m proud of.

What do you believe sets you apart as a valuable team member or leader?

With nearly two decades within the industry, I bring a deep understanding of equipment, processes, and materials – but more importantly, I enjoy sharing that knowledge. I take pride in mentoring my team, helping them build confidence, and accelerating their learning.

In what ways have you seen personal or professional growth since joining the team?

When I first joined Heraeus Electronics as a Wire Bonding Application Engineer, I was focused on very specific technical challenges. Over time, I’ve had the opportunity to take on more responsibility, and I’ve grown into an R&D Application Manager within the BL SEM Innovation Team.

I’ve developed not only my technical skills, but also my ability to lead, collaborate across teams, and think strategically. It has pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect – from mentoring others to driving innovation initiatives. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and grateful for the support and trust that helped me get here.

Can you share a story or example of how Heraeus Electronics has supported your development and wellbeing as an employee?

One of the things I appreciate about working at Heraeus Electronics is how invested the company is in our growth. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to take part in leadership, project management, and technology training programs that have really helped me expand my skills and confidence.

What’s made the biggest difference, though, is the support and guidance I’ve received from my supervisors and department leader. They’ve not only encouraged me to take on new challenges but have also been there to mentor me through them. This kind of support has helped me grow professionally and feel valued personally. I look forward to providing the same sort of support and guidance to my team within my leadership role.
